About Barcelona Cathedral Ticket
Barcelona Cathedral is not the Sagrada Família — both are magnificent Gothic-influenced churches, but they are entirely different buildings. Sagrada Família is Antoni Gaudí's still-evolving masterpiece in the Eixample district; Barcelona Cathedral is the medieval seat of the Archbishop in the Gothic Quarter, roughly 2 km away. La Seu — as locals call it — is the older, quieter, and in many ways more profoundly atmospheric of the two, a building of genuine medieval antiquity whose construction began in the late 13th century and continued for over 150 years, producing a cathedral where Romanesque foundations, Gothic nave, and Renaissance and Baroque additions layer visibly one above the other in the stonework.
The interior of the cathedral is one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture anywhere — a forest of slender columns supporting high vaulted ceilings that fill the nave with a quality of filtered light unique to great Gothic architecture, with over 40 chapels opening off the central nave including the chapel of the Christ of Lepanto, whose figurehead is said to have miraculously curved to avoid a cannon ball during the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The choir stalls — some of the most elaborately carved in Spain — are decorated with the coats of arms of European kings who attended the Chapter of the Order of the Golden Fleece here in 1519. The crypt below the main altar houses the alabaster tomb of Saint Eulalia, patron saint of Barcelona, martyred by the Romans in AD 303 and one of the most sacred objects in the city.
The cathedral's serene cloister, home to a tranquil pond and a gaggle of geese symbolising Saint Eulalia, provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling city streets. The cloister is one of the few large urban Gothic cloisters still intact in Spain — four wings of elegant Gothic arcading around a garden of magnolia, medlar, palm, and orange trees with a moss-stained fountain at the centre. The rooftop is reached by a small elevator near the south transept — the lift opens onto a narrow walkway that winds between pinnacles, flying buttresses, and lead-covered domes, with views across the Gothic Quarter's medieval rooftops, the Cathedral's ornate façade, and the wider Barcelona skyline that are genuinely spectacular and quite different from any other viewpoint in the city. Insiders' Tips
The cathedral is famous for its cloister, ornate façade, and the tomb of Saint Eulalia — arrive early in the morning before tour groups to experience the cloister's remarkable atmosphere in relative quiet, with the geese honking gently across the 14th-century vaulting. The cathedral is free during designated worship hours each morning and on weekday evenings — if you want the paid cultural visit including the rooftop and audio guide, book in advance. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees must be covered, hats are not permitted, and the dress code is enforced at the entrance.
