Montserrat Morning Tour with Black Madonna Priority Access
USD 67.56
This morning tour takes you there and back in about six hours, with a local guide and the logistics handled. You leave central Barcelona by air-conditioned coach, cross the Catalan countryside, and then ride the cogwheel train up the mountain face — a climb that turns the whole valley into a view.
At the top your guide walks you through the Basilica of Montserrat, its Gothic and Renaissance detail, and the story of the Santa Cova — the cave where, according to legend, shepherds found the image of the Virgin in the year 880, accompanied by lights and music.
Then the part most people come for: priority access to La Moreneta, the Black Madonna. She sits above the basilica's high altar in the Camarín de la Virgen, a 12th-century Romanesque carving of the Virgin and Child in dark wood, and she is the patron saint of Catalonia. The queue to reach her is often the longest of the day. Your ticket is guaranteed and prioritised, which is the practical difference between seeing her and running out of time.
After the guided portion you have free time. Included in that: a tasting of four liqueurs made locally by the monks, and entry to the Espai Audiovisual, an exhibition on the mountain's history and monastic life. Beyond that it's yours — small chapels, walking trails, the market stalls selling honey and cheese, or simply the terrace and the view down over Catalonia.
There's also an optional upgrade to hear the Escolania, one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs, singing the Salve and the Virolai in the basilica. That option runs at 13:00, Monday to Friday, during school term only.
Tours are guided in English and Spanish.

Insiders' Tips
Dress for a mountain, not a city — Montserrat sits high above the plain and can be cold, windy or wet when Barcelona is warm, so bring a layer and a waterproof whatever the forecast says. Wear proper walking shoes, since the entire visit at the top is on foot across sloping, uneven ground. If you want the Escolania, book the choir option specifically: it runs at 13:00 Monday to Friday only, the boys don't sing Saturdays, and the choir is away for most of July and August. Arrive at the Julià Travel office at Estació del Nord in good time — it's beside Platform 19 and the coach won't wait. Use your free time deliberately, as there isn't enough of it for everything; pick the museum, the funiculars or the trails before you arrive rather than deciding on the spot.
