Somewhere between Kuala Lumpur and the clouds sits one of the most improbable places in Southeast Asia. The concept was the vision of Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong<\/strong>, who looked at a dense, inaccessible jungle-covered peak an hour from KL in the 1960s and saw a hill resort. He built a road through the jungle himself, then built the resort, then spent the rest of his life expanding it into one of the most visited destinations in Malaysia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Resorts World Genting (RWG)<\/strong> receives tens of millions of visitors annually. The cool mountain air is part of the appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entry Requirements for Genting Highlands<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most visitors, including those from the US, UK, EU nations, and Australia, can enter Malaysia without a pre-arranged visa<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian nationals<\/strong> can enter visa-free<\/strong> for stays of up to 30 days under a policy active until December 31, 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All foreign visitors (except Singaporean citizens, who are exempt) must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)<\/strong> online within three days before arrival. Verify your specific requirements at imi.gov.my before travelling.<\/p>\n\n\n

Getting There from Kuala Lumpur<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Genting Highlands is about an hour from KL by road, making it one of the most accessible mountain escapes from any major Southeast Asian city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • By Bus:<\/strong> Genting Express buses depart from KL Sentral’s bus terminal (Counter 32) every 30 minutes, from approximately 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. The journey takes about 90 minutes, including a mandatory transfer at Awana Bus Station<\/strong> at the base of the mountain. From Awana, you either continue by bus to the resort or transfer to the Awana SkyWay cable car<\/strong> for a significantly more scenic arrival. Buses also depart from Puduraya and Titiwangsa in KL<\/strong>.

  • By Cable Car (Awana SkyWay):<\/strong> The cable car departs from Awana Station at the foot of the mountain and reaches SkyAvenue Station<\/strong> at the resort summit in approximately 10 minutes. The ride passes through multiple climate zones: humid lowland forest, a cloud layer, and the misty highland top<\/strong>.

    Standard enclosed gondolas and glass-floor gondolas<\/strong> (which look straight down at the forest canopy below) are both available. The SkyWay operates from 7:00 am to midnight daily. On weekends and public holidays, queues can exceed an hour at peak times, so arriving before 9 am or after 3 pm gives the best chance of a shorter wait.

  • By Car:<\/strong> The drive from KL follows the Karak Highway<\/strong>, exiting toward Genting Highlands and climbing through a scenic mountain road to the resort. The journey takes about an hour in normal conditions, with weekend traffic potentially adding 30 to 45 minutes. Parking at the resort is also available at multiple locations.
