The <strong>San Diego Zoo<\/strong> is the finest in America. The <strong>craft beer <\/strong>scene is so dense and so good that visiting it comprehensively is a multi-day project. And the city that occupies all of this has a warmth and a laid-back confidence that is completely its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sitting at the southwestern corner of the continental <strong>United States<\/strong>, 15 miles north of the Mexican border, San Diego is one of the country&#8217;s most military cities (the US Navy and Marine Corps both have major bases here), one of its most biodiverse, and one of the most consistently underestimated by visitors who expect it to be a quieter Los Angeles and find instead something much more interesting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give it four days. A taxi or rideshare from the airport to central San Diego takes about 10 to 15 minutes and costs $15 to $25, depending on traffic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rideshare pickup is at the Ground Transportation Center. Just follow the signs from baggage claim. It is useful for downtown, Old Town, and the stadium area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MTS Bus:<\/strong> Covers areas the trolley does not reach, including Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, and La Jolla. The Pacific Beach to Mission Beach boardwalk is one of the best flat cycling routes in the city. The <strong>Fleet Science Center<\/strong> is the most interactive, with a digital dome theatre and hands-on exhibits best suited to families and younger visitors. The San Diego Zoo is the finest in America. The craft beer scene is so dense and so good that visiting it comprehensively is a multi-day project. And the city that occupies all of this has a warmth and a laid-back confidence that is completely its own. Sitting at the southwestern corner of the continental United States, 15 miles north of the Mexican border, San Diego is one of the country&#8217;s most military cities (the US Navy and Marine Corps both have major bases here), one of its most biodiverse, and one of the most consistently underestimated by visitors who expect it to be a quieter Los Angeles and find instead something much more interesting.&nbsp; Give it four days. Three for the main sights and one for Coronado or a day on the water. You will definitely want more. Getting There and Getting Around By air: San Diego International Airport (SAN) is one of the closest major airports to a downtown area in the United States, sitting only 3 miles from the Gaslamp Quarter. A taxi or rideshare from the airport to central San Diego takes about 10 to 15 minutes and costs $15 to $25, depending on traffic.&nbsp; Rideshare pickup is at the Ground Transportation Center. Just follow the signs from baggage claim. The airport is served by direct flights from most major US cities and a number of international routes. By car: From Los Angeles, San Diego is about 120 miles south on the I-5 (approximately 2 to 2.5 hours without traffic, considerably longer on Friday afternoons). From Las Vegas, it is about 330 miles west (approximately 4.5 to 5 hours via the I-15 South). Driving is the most flexible option for covering San Diego&#8217;s spread-out attractions. Getting around the city: Balboa Park Balboa Park is the cultural heart of San Diego. It is a 1,200-acre urban park sitting on a mesa above downtown with 17 museums, multiple performing arts venues, lush gardens, and the San Diego Zoo, all concentrated in a walkable area connected by pedestrian promenades and the El Prado pathway. The park&#8217;s Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, built originally for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, is a destination in itself. The towers, arcades, and formal gardens of the El Prado corridor are among the most beautiful public spaces on the West Coast. Admission to the park itself is free, but the museums and the zoo charge entry. The San Diego Museum of Art holds the largest collection of European, American, and Asian art in the American Southwest. The Museum of Us covers anthropology and the human story from prehistory to the present. The Fleet Science Center is the most interactive, with a digital dome theatre and hands-on exhibits best suited to families and younger visitors. The Museum of Natural History covers the natural history of Southern California and Baja California with strong exhibits on local geology, dinosaurs, and the remarkable biodiversity of the region. The Botanical Building along the El Prado pathway, a large wooden lattice structure housing over 2,000 tropical and flowering plants, is free to enter and one of the most beautiful spaces in the park. The surrounding gardens include a Japanese Friendship Garden with a koi pond and teahouse, a Cactus Garden with remarkable desert plant specimens, and a Rose Garden with more than 1,600 rose bushes at their best from April through November. San Diego Zoo The San Diego Zoo is widely regarded as the finest zoo in the United States and one of the best in the world. Situated on 100 acres within Balboa Park, with the park&#8217;s canyon setting providing natural elevation changes, it houses over 3,500 animals representing more than 650 species in immersive, largely barrier-free exhibits designed around the natural habitats of the animals. The Panda Canyon is the zoo&#8217;s most famous exhibit, home to the giant panda breeding program that has made San Diego one of the most successful panda conservation facilities outside of China.&nbsp; The Elephant Odyssey exhibit follows the story of California&#8217;s prehistoric megafauna through a comparison with the modern species that descended from them. The Africa Rocks section covers a range of African biomes in a series of immersive habitats for penguins, meerkats, baboons, and leopards. Arriving at the zoo at opening and using the Skyfari aerial tram to understand the layout before walking through the exhibits is the most efficient approach. A full day is needed to do the zoo proper justice, because attempting it in half a day leaves most visitors feeling rushed. San Diego Zoo Safari Park The San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, about 30 miles north of downtown, is the sister institution to the zoo and an entirely different experience. The park covers 1,800 acres of canyon and chaparral landscape with open-range habitats where giraffes, rhinos, elephants, gazelles, and other African and Asian species live in large, naturalistic areas together rather than in individual enclosures. The Africa Tram Tour is the centrepiece, with a narrated open-air tram ride through the park&#8217;s large field exhibits covering multiple species in a setting that genuinely evokes a wildlife reserve. The tram runs multiple times daily, though the morning tours are the best for animal activity and energy.&nbsp; Beyond the tram, the walking routes through the park cover a lion camp, a cheetah
