worked in the city for most of his career and left a body of work that transforms the experience of walking through it. Seven of his buildings are <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Sites<\/strong>. Understanding Gaud\u00ed is understanding Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>La Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/strong> is the building that defines not just Gaud\u00ed but the entire idea of what a cathedral can be. Construction began in 1882. Gaud\u00ed devoted the final 43 years of his life to it, and it is buried in the crypt, and the building is still under construction, with completion expected in the early 2030s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interior, with its forest of branching columns and coloured light through the stained glass windows, is unlike any other interior in architecture. It is the most visited monument in Spain. Don\u2019t forget to book the tickets weeks or months in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Park G\u00fcell<\/strong> on the Carmel hillside was designed as a residential estate, failed commercially, and was donated to the city. What remains is one of the most extraordinary public spaces in Europe: <strong>the Dragon Staircase<\/strong> with its polychrome lizard,<strong> the Hypostyle Hall of Doric columns<\/strong>, and <strong>the serpentine trencad\u00eds bench <\/strong>at the top with the finest panoramic view of Barcelona. Entry to the ticketed Monumental Zone must be booked in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Casa Batll\u00f3<\/strong> on the Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia (remodelled 1904-1906) has the most colourful and most photographed Gaud\u00ed facade, with ceramic discs and bone-shaped columns and a maritime-themed interior. <strong>Casa Mil\u00e0 (La Pedrera)<\/strong>, also on the Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia (completed 1912), is the most structurally radical. The 1.2 km tree-lined promenade runs from Pla\u00e7a de Catalunya to the waterfront and has a genuine energy to it despite its tourist reputation, with flower stalls, the human statues, and the Boqueria market midway along all still worth stopping for. <strong>La Boqueria<\/strong> itself is visually spectacular and best approached with some selectivity: the stalls near the entrance are firmly tourist-facing, but the bars and counters deeper inside, particularly El Quim de la Boqueria, serve genuinely excellent food at honest prices to locals who have been using the market for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Las Ramblas, heading west into El Raval reveals the most ethnically diverse and most creatively interesting neighbourhood in central Barcelona. What was historically the working-class quarter of the city is now home to the<strong> MACBA (Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona)<\/strong>, housed in Richard Meier's striking white building completed in 1995, whose plaza has become the city's unofficial skateboarding hub. And it has a food culture that runs from the simplest pan amb tom\u00e0quet (bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil) to the most technically ambitious tasting menus in Europe, often within a few streets of each other. The capital of Catalonia sits on the Mediterranean coast of northeastern Spain between the Collserola hills and the sea, a city of 1.6 million people in a compact grid that makes it one of the most walkable major cities in Europe.&nbsp; Catalan identity, architecture, food, football, and the particular quality of the Mediterranean light that makes everything look slightly better than it would anywhere else combine into something that earns every superlative visitor&#8217;s reach for.&nbsp; Give it four days. Three for the essential Gaud\u00ed and Gothic and one for the beach and the neighbourhood exploration that makes Barcelona feel personal rather than ticked off. Entry Requirements for Barcelona Getting There and Getting Around Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is 12 km southwest of the city center, with two main terminals (T1 and T2). The Aerob\u00fas runs every 5 to 10 minutes between both terminals and Pla\u00e7a de Catalunya (the central hub of the city) in approximately 35 minutes, the fastest and most direct airport connection available.&nbsp; The Renfe R2 Nord train connects T2 to Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia and Barcelona Sants station in about 25 minutes but does not serve T1.&nbsp; Taxis from the airport to the city centre are metered and take about 25 to 35 minutes. The Aerob\u00fas Barcelona Airport Transfer is available through Thrillark for both directions: airport to city centre and city centre to airport, in a reliable direct coach with luggage space. Getting around the city: Barcelona&#8217;s public transport network is excellent and covers every area of the city with frequency. Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s Barcelona Antoni Gaud\u00ed (1852-1926) is the dominant architectural presence in Barcelona, a Catalan Modernisme architect who worked in the city for most of his career and left a body of work that transforms the experience of walking through it. Seven of his buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Understanding Gaud\u00ed is understanding Barcelona. La Sagrada Fam\u00edlia is the building that defines not just Gaud\u00ed but the entire idea of what a cathedral can be. Construction began in 1882. Gaud\u00ed devoted the final 43 years of his life to it, and it is buried in the crypt, and the building is still under construction, with completion expected in the early 2030s.&nbsp; The interior, with its forest of branching columns and coloured light through the stained glass windows, is unlike any other interior in architecture. It is the most visited monument in Spain. Don\u2019t forget to book the tickets weeks or months in advance. Park G\u00fcell on the Carmel hillside was designed as a residential estate, failed commercially, and was donated to the city. What remains is one of the most extraordinary public spaces in Europe: the Dragon Staircase with its polychrome lizard, the Hypostyle Hall of Doric columns, and the serpentine trencad\u00eds bench at the top with the finest panoramic view of Barcelona. Entry to the ticketed Monumental Zone must be booked in advance. Casa Batll\u00f3 on the Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia (remodelled 1904-1906) has the most colourful and most photographed Gaud\u00ed facade, with ceramic discs and bone-shaped columns and a maritime-themed interior. Casa Mil\u00e0 (La Pedrera), also on the Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia (completed 1912), is the most structurally radical. It is a free-standing stone facade with no straight lines, topped by a rooftop of warrior-like chimneys.&nbsp; Palau G\u00fcell in El Raval (1886-1890) is the first major Gaud\u00ed commission and the least crowded of the main buildings. Casa Vicens in Gr\u00e0cia (1883-1885) was his debut work, covered in Moorish-influenced ceramic tiles and the least visited of all. The Gothic Quarter and El Born From the Gaud\u00ed buildings on the Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia, the city moves east and downhill toward the medieval heart.&nbsp; The Gothic Quarter (Barri G\u00f2tic) is the oldest continuously inhabited part of Barcelona, built on and around the Roman walls of the ancient settlement of Barcino (founded around 15 BC). The medieval street pattern survives almost intact, with Roman foundations visible beneath the paving stones in the Pla\u00e7a de Sant Jaume. Barcelona Cathedral on the Pla\u00e7a de la Seu was begun in 1298 and completed by 1450, with a 19th-century neo-Gothic facade. The cloister, with its 13 white geese maintained as a tribute to the 13-year-old Santa Eul\u00e0lia, is the most tranquil space in the Gothic Quarter. El Born immediately east is the most fashionable neighbourhood in old Barcelona, with the Bas\u00edlica de Santa Maria del Mar (1329-1384, the most perfectly proportioned Gothic church in Catalonia), the Born Cultural Centre over the excavated ruins of the 1714 siege, and the highest density of independent boutiques and bars in the old city. Las Ramblas and El Raval Las Ramblas is worth walking once, preferably in the morning before the crowds arrive. The 1.2 km tree-lined promenade runs from Pla\u00e7a de Catalunya to the waterfront and has a genuine energy to it despite its tourist reputation, with flower stalls, the human statues, and the Boqueria market midway along all still worth stopping for. La Boqueria itself is visually spectacular and best approached with some selectivity: the stalls near the entrance are firmly tourist-facing, but the bars and counters deeper inside, particularly El Quim de la Boqueria, serve genuinely excellent food at honest prices to locals who have been using the market for years. From Las Ramblas, heading west into El Raval reveals the most ethnically diverse and most creatively interesting neighbourhood in central Barcelona.
