About Palau de la Música Catalana
The Palau de la Música Catalana is one of Barcelona's most impressive buildings and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 — built between 1905 and 1908 by Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner in the Modernisme style and considered a masterpiece of Catalan Art Nouveau. It was not commissioned by the city — it was created as a new headquarters for the Orfeó Català, a choral society founded in 1891 and one of Catalonia's top choirs to this day, funded by local textile manufacturers and music fans. Every element of the building was designed to serve both the music performed within it and the decorative language of Catalan Modernisme — and the result is a building where the boundary between architecture and art dissolves entirely. The expansive concert hall features an enormous stained-glass skylight that floods the space with natural light — an inverted dome of richly coloured glass supported by 40 ornate arches, bathing the audience in shifting coloured light that changes through the day and the seasons. The hall's walls are covered in mosaic columns, sculptural reliefs of Catalan folk songs and European musical traditions, and the famous semicircular back wall of the stage framing a dramatic sculpture group of horses and riders bursting from the wall in the most theatrical architectural gesture in any concert hall in the world. A guided tour of 55 minutes leads visitors through all the important rooms in the Palau de la Música, including the practice areas, the organ, and the concert hall. Insiders' Tips
Is it really worth visiting a concert hall when there's no show on? Trust us when we say yes, yes, yes! This is no ordinary concert hall. The stained-glass skylight changes dramatically with the light throughout the day — a morning visit when the natural light is at its brightest through the eastern windows delivers the most spectacular colour effects in the concert hall. If you can attend an evening concert rather than or in addition to the daytime tour, do — hearing the hall in full use with a live performance is an unforgettable experience.
