About Whaley House Museum Ticket

Thomas Whaley arrived in San Diego as a pioneer merchant and in 1857 built the finest house in the region, a Greek Revival brick residence on San Diego Avenue. It was praised at the time as the first of its kind in southern California, and it became a central pillar of Old Town life, housing not just the Whaley family but at various points a general store, the county courthouse and a commercial theatre.

The darker history is part of the fabric. The land had previously held the town gallows, where a man named Yankee Jim Robinson was hanged in 1852, five years before the house went up. Several members of the Whaley family also died in the building, including Anna Whaley and three of the children, Thomas Jr., Violet and Francis.

All of this has given the house a reputation that draws visitors from around the world. It opened as a museum in 1960, around 100,000 people come through each year, and it has been named America’s Most Haunted House for decades. Whether or not you arrive expecting ghosts, the building is a remarkable survivor, preserved with authentic period furnishings and interiors.

The daytime visit is self-guided, so you move through the exhibit rooms and grounds at your own pace, with a short introductory talk given roughly every 15 minutes covering the history and the museum itself.
