About The Art Institute of Chicago: Fast Pass Ticket
The Impressionist and Post-Impressionist galleries are the crown jewel. More than 25 works by Monet alone line the walls — Stacks of Wheat, the Haystacks series, the Water Lilies — each one demonstrating a different facet of his obsessive engagement with light and time. Alongside them: Renoir, Degas, Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, displayed at nearly ten feet wide, is the painting that defines the collection — a work so frequently studied and referenced that seeing it in person feels like meeting an old acquaintance.
Beyond the Impressionists, the American collection holds its own. Nighthawks by Edward Hopper is one of the most instantly recognisable paintings in the world — a diner scene at night that somehow captures an entire American cultural mood. Grant Wood's American Gothic hangs nearby. These two paintings alone justify the visit for many. Add the modern wing (Matisse, Picasso, Dalí, Warhol), the ancient collections, and the famously delightful Thorne Miniature Rooms — 68 scale models of European and American interiors — and you have a full day, easily.
