About Museum of Broadway Ticket
The museum spans three floors with nearly 500 objects and artefacts from over 500 productions spanning the 1700s to the present. The three main sections are the Map Room covering the geography and history of the Broadway district, the Broadway Timeline providing a comprehensive chronological journey through Broadway's evolution, and The Making of a Broadway Show — an immersive behind-the-scenes look at how a production comes together from concept to opening night.
The Broadway Timeline is the heart of the museum — beginning in 1732 and moving through every era and genre of American theatrical history, showing how Broadway has continually reflected and challenged social attitudes, pushed creative boundaries, and influenced culture far beyond New York City. Showcased productions include the Ziegfeld Follies, Show Boat, Oklahoma!, Hair, The Wiz, The Phantom of the Opera, Rent, The Lion King, Hamilton, and hundreds more — each represented through original artefacts, immersive environments, and the kind of detail that rewards theatre lovers of every level of knowledge. A giant quilt featuring embroidered and quilted panels from dozens of different shows is one of the most unexpectedly charming and consistently praised exhibits in the entire collection.
The Making of a Broadway Show is where the museum achieves something genuinely unique — an immersive walkthrough of the full life cycle of a production, from early writer's room drafts and design studio concept work to sound and lighting desks, costume construction, and stage management command centres. Rather than simply showing you costumes or posters, you're invited behind the curtain. Step into writers' rooms filled with early drafts, design studios where sets and props are imagined, sound and lighting desks where atmosphere is created, and costume and stage management stations that keep everything running smoothly. A rotating special exhibition space adds fresh content on every visit. Photography and video are encouraged throughout the museum experience. Insiders' Tips
The tour begins in the back of the ground floor and goes up three stories — you begin on floor three and work your way down. Allow at least two hours to take your time properly — rushing through misses the extraordinary detail in every exhibit. The Making of a Broadway Show section is the most consistently moving and most talked-about section of the museum — give it the time it deserves rather than treating it as a transition between the main timeline galleries.
