Gold Coast 3-Day Itinerary: The Perfect Trip Plan

Australia's holiday coast packs world-class theme parks, a 57 km run of surf beaches, and one of the country's best wildlife sanctuaries into a strip you can drive end to end in about an hour. This three-day plan gives each day one clear focus rather than stacking multiple ticketed attractions into a single day. You get one full theme park day, one unhurried beach and skyline day, and one wildlife and southern coast day. That's the pacing every experienced Gold Coast itinerary, from the official tourism board's guide to the theme parks' own family blogs, converges on, because the city's attractions are spread out and each one is genuinely a half-day to full-day commitment, not a quick stop.

  • One theme park, one beach day, one wildlife sanctuary
  • Paced day by day, north to south
  • Finish near Burleigh Heads or Coolangatta
Gold Coast

The plan at a glance

  1. One theme park, done properly. Pick a single park in the north of the city and give it the whole day, gates to close. This alone is nine or so hours once you include queues and shows.
  2. Surfers Paradise, the beach, and SkyPoint. A slow start, beach and Esplanade time, an optional short water activity, and SkyPoint at sunset. It’s the least structured day of the three, and usually the one people remember most fondly.
  3. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the southern coast. The 8 am lorikeet feeding, a full sanctuary visit, then an easy, unticketed afternoon at Burleigh Heads or Coolangatta.

New to the Gold Coast? Start with the city guide

This page is the day-by-day plan. If you are still deciding what the Gold Coast is actually like, which attractions are worth your money, and what else is on offer beyond the three days below, our full Gold Coast city guide covers everything from the theme park corridor in the north to the hinterland rainforest behind the coast. It is the better place to start if your dates are not locked in yet.

Day one

One full day at a theme park

Pick one park and commit to the whole day. Adding a second attraction or an evening show on top of a full theme park day is the single most common way this trip gets overtired. Arriving at open and leaving near close, on foot most of the day, is already a lot.

Warner Bros. Movie World, Gold Coast
Morning to Evening, 9:30 am to 5 pm, allow the full day

Choose your park

The three main parks suit different groups, and picking the right one matters more than trying to see all three.

  • Warner Bros. Movie World is the pick for teens and adults chasing rollercoasters. DC Rivals HyperCoaster is the tallest, longest, and fastest hypercoaster in the Southern
  • Hemisphere at 61.6 metres and 115 km/h, and The Flash: Speed Force, opened in 2024, is the latest thrill ride in the park.
  • Dreamworld is the pick for mixed-age families. It's Australia's largest theme park by area, with ride heights spanning toddlers to teenagers, plus a wildlife precinct where you can get close to koalas and kangaroos without booking anything separate.
  • SeaWorld is the pick if marine life matters as much as the rides. Leviathan is Australia’s latest traditional wooden coaster, and the marine presentations, including the dolphin show and the Thunder Lake Stunt Show, run on a fixed daily schedule.
  • Gates typically open around 9:30 am with rides running to 5 pm. Hours extend during Queensland school holidays.

Whichever park you choose, walk straight to the headline ride when the gates open. Queues on the big coasters go from around ten minutes to over an hour by midday, and they rarely recover after that.

Evening

Wind down, don't stack

The temptation is to follow a full park day with a ticketed dinner show or a late activity. Resist it. A relaxed dinner near your hotel in Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach is the right call after a day spent mostly on your feet, and it means Day 2 starts fresh rather than recovering from a 9 am-to-10 pm marathon.

If you do want a bigger night out on this trip, save it for Day 2, when the day itself is far less physically demanding and an evening show or cruise adds to the day instead of extending it.

Day two

Surfers Paradise, the beach, and SkyPoint at sunset

No early alarm, no fixed schedule until the evening. This is the day to let build slowly, and it's consistently the one visitors rate highest precisely because nothing is rushed.

Surfers Paradise Beach, Gold Coast
Late morning, allow 2 to 3 hours

Beach and the Esplanade

Surfers Paradise Beach is the postcard shot for a reason. You get to enjoy wide sand with the skyline rising directly behind it.

  • Walk or cycle the Esplanade, which runs the length of the beach and is flat and shaded in parts.
  • Swim at the patrolled section of Surfers Paradise Beach, or head slightly south to the calmer, more sheltered water at Tallebudgera Creek if you're travelling with young children.
  • If it's warm and you want a couple of hours of structured fun, WhiteWater World is a short drive north and works well as a late-morning add-on without eating into the rest of the day.

This block of the day has no ticket and no schedule. Resist the urge to fill it with a booked activity. The whole point of Day 2 is that it isn't Day 1.

Midday

Lunch on the water

Anywhere along the Esplanade works, from casual fish and chips to sit-down cafés facing the beach. No booking needed.

Early afternoon, 55 to 90 minutes, optional

On the water, if you want it

If half a day of beach and walking isn't enough activity for your group, both options below leave from within walking distance of the Esplanade and fit into this slot without displacing anything else.

  • The jet boat spends around 55 minutes doing spins and power stops across the Broadwater.
  • The Aquaduck is an amphibious city tour that drives straight into the Nerang River partway through.

Treat this as optional, not mandatory. Skipping it and staying on the beach longer is just as valid a Day 2.

Arrive 60 minutes before sunset, allow 1 to 2 hours

SkyPoint Observation Deck at sunset

This is the anchor of the day. SkyPoint sits on level 77 of the Q1 tower, reached by a 43-second lift, and is Australia's only beachside observation deck.

  • On a clear evening, the view runs from Byron Bay in the south to Brisbane in the north.
  • Arriving before sunset gets you three views on one ticket: daylight, the sunset itself, and the city lighting up afterwards.
  • There's a bar serving drinks and small plates at the top, so this can comfortably double as your evening rather than being squeezed in before dinner elsewhere.

Book a timed entry rather than turning up. Golden hour is the busiest slot of the day, and the exact sunset time shifts by nearly two hours across the year here.

Evening, choose one

A bigger night out, if you want one

If you'd rather make tonight the special occasion of the trip instead of an early night, this is the slot for it, and it’s not stacked onto Day 1.

  • The Australian Outback Spectacular pairs a three-course dinner with a 1-hour 50-minute live production of stockmen, horses, and pyrotechnics.
  • A Broadwater buffet dinner cruise covers dinner and sightseeing in one booking.

Pick one, not both. Either fits naturally after a SkyPoint sunset. Doing both turns a relaxed day back into a packed one.

Day three

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the Southern Coast

The earliest start of the trip, and for most people, the day they'd repeat first if they only had time for one.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Gold Coast
8:00 am, free, no ticket needed

Wild lorikeet feeding at Currumbin

Hundreds of wild rainbow lorikeets land on the lawn outside the sanctuary gates, and it is a tradition running since 1947.

  • The feeding runs daily at 8 am and 4 pm, and no entry ticket is required to watch or take part.
  • A gold coin donation gets you a nectar tray, and the birds land on your hands, arms, and shoulders without much encouragement.
  • The session lasts around 90 minutes, and the café opens at 8 am too.

The 8 am session is quieter and cooler than the 4 pm one, with better light for photos.

9:00 am, allow 4 to 5 hours

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Twenty-seven hectares of eucalypt and rainforest, run by the National Trust, with more than 1,400 animals.

  • Kangaroo feeding is included with general entry, and you walk freely among kangaroos, wallabies, and emus in open grassland.
  • Koalas, the Croc Wetlands, and the Lost Valley precinct round out the main circuit.
  • Free-flight bird shows and keeper talks run on a schedule posted at the gate.
  • A small-group Wildlife Hospital tour runs most mornings and needs to be booked in advance.

Book any small-group encounters at the same time as your entry ticket. They sell out, and the gate can't add them on the day.

Early to mid afternoon, unstructured

The southern beaches

It is deliberately open-ended. After four to five hours at the sanctuary, this is downtime, not another ticketed stop.

  • Burleigh Heads is 15–20 minutes away, with a headland boardwalk through pandanus and hoop pines above one of Australia's most photographed point breaks.
  • Coolangatta is a similar distance and has the calmer, more sheltered swimming beaches, plus it's five minutes from the airport if you're flying out the next day.
  • James Street behind Burleigh Beach has the best casual dining on the coast if you want an easy dinner to close out the trip.

Don't book anything for this slot. After a full sanctuary visit, unstructured beach time is what actually gets used, not another activity on the schedule.

Make it yours

Swap any day for one of these

The structure above works for most travellers, but what fills each slot is easy to change. Keep the pacing, swap the specifics.

Hot summer days

Wet'n'Wild

Wet'n'Wild instead of a dry theme park is a great alternate for hot summer months. It is on the same Oxenford precinct as Movie World, without queuing in direct sun.

When to go

The Best Time to Visit the Gold Coast

Timing this trip well comes down to two things: the weather along the coast and how busy the theme parks are likely to be. The shoulder seasons on either side of summer tend to hit the best balance of both, but each stretch of the year has its own trade-offs worth weighing before you lock in dates.

Best Window

March to May

Warm days around 24–27°C, a warm ocean, little rain, and the parks are quiet outside the April school break. It is the best window overall.

Whale watching season

June to August

Clear and dry around 19–22°C. Too cool for the water park elements of Day 2, but this is peak whale watching season, and the theme parks are at their emptiest.

Warm and comfortable

September to November

September to November is warm, dry, and comfortable. Avoid mid- to late November, when Schoolies Week takes over Surfers Paradise.

Beach weather

December to February

Proper beach weather at 28–30°C, but humid with afternoon storms, and the heaviest crowds and prices of the year.

Whichever month you pick, the theme parks are noticeably quieter Tuesday to Thursday. Doing Day 1 on a weekday rather than a Saturday can halve your ride queues without changing anything else about the trip.

Base yourself

Where to stay

Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach works best as a base for this specific itinerary, since both sit on the tram line, put all of Day 2 within walking distance, and keep the Day 1 drive to the northern parks under 30 minutes.

Central and lively

Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise is central and sits right on the tram line, putting you within walking distance of both SkyPoint and the beach. It's the liveliest option, which also means it can get loud at night.

Best Food

Broadbeach

Broadbeach is quieter than Surfers Paradise, with better restaurants, and it's still on the tram line, right next to Pacific Fair.

Proximity to Airport

Coolangatta

Coolangatta suits you best if Day 3 is your priority or you're flying out afterwards, since it's five minutes from the airport and only a short drive to Currumbin.

Questions

Gold Coast 3-Day Itinerary FAQs

Is 3 days enough for the Gold Coast?

Yes, if you give each day one focus instead of trying to fit in several attractions per day. One theme park day, one beach and skyline day, one wildlife and southern coast day is a realistic, unhurried pace. What it won't cover is the hinterland. Tamborine Mountain, Lamington National Park, and Springbrook each need most of a day on their own, so they're better suited to a four- or five-day trip.

Should I try to fit two theme parks into three days?

Only with a genuine reason, like a multi-day pass you're already paying for. Each park is a full day on foot from open to close, and stacking a second park or an evening show onto the same day is the most common reason people say their Gold Coast trip felt rushed rather than fun.

What's the best 3-day itinerary for families with young children?

Make Dreamworld the Day 1 anchor, since it has the widest range of ride heights and a wildlife precinct built in. Keep Day 2 as beach and SkyPoint, adding WhiteWater World in the late morning if it's warm. Keep Currumbin on Day 3 for the kangaroo feeding, which is included with entry.

Do you need a car on the Gold Coast?

For Day 1, you want a car or the tram plus bus TX7. Day 2 is fully walkable if you're staying in Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach. Day 3 genuinely needs a car or rideshare, since the 8 am lorikeet feeding at Currumbin is very hard to reach by public transport on that timeline.

What is the best month to visit the Gold Coast?

March to May and September to November are the two best windows: warm days, swimmable water, low rainfall, and fewer crowds than summer. Avoid the December and January school holidays for queues, and mid- to late November if you want Surfers Paradise quiet.

Is Movie World or Dreamworld better for Day 1?

Movie World suits teens and adults chasing rollercoasters, with DC Rivals HyperCoaster and The Flash: Speed Force. Dreamworld suits mixed-age families, since it's Australia's largest theme park by area and combines rides with a wildlife precinct, so younger children aren't left out.

Do I need to book Gold Coast attraction tickets in advance?

For the theme parks, booking ahead mostly saves money rather than time. For anything with a fixed start time (SkyPoint sunset slots, the Australian Outback Spectacular, whale watching cruises, small-group encounters at Currumbin), booking ahead protects the trip, since these genuinely sell out on weekends and during school holidays.
